What Brings Us Life

O Beloved Spirit,
We don’t always know how to think about our life.
It always surprises us with the turns it takes.
Certainly, there continues to be more room for joy
than we ever thought possible.
Certainly, there is more unknown, more unknowable,
than what we can claim to actually know.
Certainly, each day we learn
how transformative love can be,
tenderizing the hardness of our hearts.

And so, Beloved Spirit,
No, we don’t always know how to think about our life.
It always surprises us with the turns it takes.
How do we know if we totally missed
that we were on sacred ground
and should have taken off our shoes?
How do we know if we have
missed hearing the call from a fiery voice
and just passed it by without a second look?
How do we know if we have
overlooked the miraculous
tucked into the ordinariness of our day
and were dismissive of its gift?

O Beloved Spirit, we don’t always know
how to think about our life.
It always surprises us with the turns it takes.
And still, without knowing what to think,
we always know what brings us life
as we experience such gratitude for the
blessings beyond our wildest imagination.
And still, without knowing what to think,
we always know what brings us Life
as we experience the humor of being human,
of growing older, of getting it wrong,
of forgetting self if only for a moment.
And still, without knowing what to think,
we always know what brings us Life
as we experience the upending power of beauty
as it arrests the eye and holds us in a suspense of awe.
No, we don’t always know how to think about our life.
It always surprises us with the turns it takes.
but we do know what brings us Life
as we are immersed in the midst of a miracle--
as we are a miracle in the midst of a miracle.
Beyond knowing what to think
we know what brings us Life
as we submit to the immense marvel of gratitude
for the love and joy we have been granted. Thank you. Amen
